Pros & Cons of Embryonic Stem Cell Research
This article simplifies the pros & cons of stem cell research. Most scientists believe that embryonic stem cells hold the key to curing hundreds of diseases, yet staunch pro-lifers believe that it's immoral to destroy a days-old embryo to save or alleviate suffering of existing life. Most Americans want federal funds used to advance stem cell research despite President Bush's ban.

The House passed H.R. 810, Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005, on May 24, 2005, by a vote of 238-194, and the Senate resoundngly passed it on July 18, 2006. Yet on the next day for ideological reasons supported by the religious right, President Bush vetoed this bill authorizing federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.

Per Dr. James Dobson's Focus on the Family website, a beacon of religious right thought, "Focus on the Family opposes stem cell research that destroys embryonic humans." The embryonic stem cell therapy newly announced by Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. does NOT destroy "embryonic humans." Yet, first word from the religious right is that it opposes this ground-breaking technique.
