Andrew Cuomo, New York state Attorney General:

Andrew Cuomo, New York Attorney General since January 2007, was elected New York governor on November 2, 2010. Cuomo is son of Mario Cuomo, New York governor from 1983 to 1994.

While serving as advisor and aide in the elder Cuomo's administration, Andrew Cuomo became particularly active in and knowledgeable of housing and homeless programs and issues. Cuomo served as U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development during the Clinton administration, from 1997 to 2001.

Although widely admired for his accomplishments, Cuomo has a combative, prickly personality that doesn't endear him to voters. (See below for more.)

The 2010 New York Governor Race:

Democrat Andrew Cuomo prevailed over Republican Carl Paladino in New York's 2010 gubernatorial election race.

Paladino, a millionaire businessman supported by the Tea Party movement, is a blunt-talking fiscal conservative who has been entangled in various personal scandals, including sexually and racially offensive emails. Paladino controversially remarked in October 2010, "I don't want them [children] to be brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid and successful option."

Andrew Cuomo on the Issues:

Cuomo's campaign platform was set forth in a 250-page document which detailed his "five-point plan to build a New NY":
  • "Clean Up Albany. We must restore honor and integrity to government."
  • "Get Our Fiscal House In Order. We must get our State’s fiscal house in order."
  • "Rightsizing Government. Government in New York is too big, ineffective, and expensive."
  • "NY Works. We must make New York the jobs capital of the nation."
  • "NY Leads. New York has been a national leader in protecting and advancing individual rights and safeguarding the future of its citizens."

Andrew Cuomo's Career:

From 1982 through the 1995 end of father Mario Cuomo's tenure as New York governor, Andrew Cuomo served as advisor in his father's administration. During that period, the younger Cuomo became particularly active in housing and homeless programs and issues.

From 1997 to 2001, Andrew Cuomo was the Clinton administration's Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, where he innovated many policies to increase home ownership and affordable housing, and to end housing discrimination.

After an unsuccessful 2002 run for New York's Democratic gubernatorial nomination, Cuomo won 2006 election as New York Attorney General.

Andrew Cuomo's Abrasive Persona:

Per Salon.com in 2002 after Cuomo withdrew from a primary race, "... to those who have come in contact with Cuomo and seen how his grating personality has sullied what could have been a promising campaign, his withdrawal was surprising only in that it was a rare moment of grace... amid what could have been a dignified exit, came reports that... Cuomo was acting up again, blaring his obnoxiousness for all to suffer."

Salon.com continued "Cuomo's ability to alienate was almost unparalleled. Cuomo... was a loyal Cabinet secretary during the Clinton administration, yet few of his former colleagues supported his campaign."

Former Gov. Eliot Spitzer on Andrew Cuomo:

Former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer said about gubernatorial candidate Cuomo to CNN in September 2010, "The problem that Andrew has is that everybody knows that behind the scenes, he is the dirtiest, nastiest political player out there and that is his reputation from years in Washington. When his father was governor, he was the tough guy. He has brass knuckles and he played hard ball. He has a lot of enemies out there. Nobody's been willing to stand up to him. When it appeared he was going to win, it was inevitable. If it appears not to be inevitable, things may change."
