  • Incumbent Sen. Stabenow is respected in Michigan, and has been quite successful in securing federal funding and projects to aid the ailing state.
  • Michigan unemployment and foreclosure rates are among the nation's highest, fomenting anger and impatience with Obama administration policies. Detroit has been especially affected by urban blight, failing schools, and rampant joblessness.

Minnesota US Senate Election 2012

Wicker will be opposed by Democrat Albert Gore, is a retired Methodist minister and retired Army colonel who is running on a platform of energy independence, addressing climate change, and development of renewable energy sources. Gore is not related to former Vice President Gore.

Missouri US Senate Election 2012

INCUMBENT - Democrat Claire McCaskill, one term

WHO WILL WIN? In May 2012, this race is rated a "Toss-Up" by Real Clear Politics for several reasons:

  • Incumbent Sen. McCaskill, a moderate Democrat who has served in public office since 1982, is admired in Missouri.
  • Missouri is predominantly a bipartisan state that often elects both Democrats and Republicans to office.
A concern for Sen. McCaskill's 2012 campaign are May 2011 complaints that she used taxpayer funds to underwrite plane trips for political, not official, purposes. In response, Sen. McCaskill repaid $88,000 to the U.S. Treasury for the costs of all flights under scrutiny.

Montana US Senate Election 2012

  • Sen. Tester, a moderate Democrat and a farmer, is well-liked in agriculture-heavy Montana.
  • Montana voters generally lean Republican more than Democratic.
  • Montana voters supported Republican McCain over Democrat Obama in the 2008 presidential race. Obama is not popular in the Big Sky Country state.

Republican Fischer scored a surprise primary victory over two moderate candidates with endorsements from Sarah Palin, Rick Santorum, and U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint.

Nevada US Senate Election 2012

  • Nevada is a classic red/blue bipartisan state, with staunch conservative libertarian and liberal labor union factions.
  • Sen. Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader, hails from Nevada, and has considerable influence with a large segment of voters, particularly Hispanics who comprise 26.5% of all Nevadans.
  • Republican Sen. Heller, who was appointed to succeed Republican Sen. John Ensign, has served in public office representing Nevada since 1990. Most recently, Heller was Congressman from Nevada's 2nd district.

New Mexico US Senate Election 2012

WHO WILL WIN? - In November, Republican Heather Wilson, who served in the House of Representative for six terms, will compete against Democrat Martin Heinrich, now completing his first term in Congress. Heinrich, an environmentalist, on the Albuquerque City Council for four years.

In May 2012, this race is rated "Leans Dem" by Real Clear Politics because New Mexico is largely a Democratic-voting state. Hispanics comprise 46.3% of all New Mexicans.

Republican Wilson is respected throughout the state, however. And in 2010, New Mexico elected a Republican governor, Susana Martinez.
