Religious Faith at the '08 Democratic Convention

For the first time, religious leaders from broad spectrum of faith traditions will actively participate in the '08 Democratic Convention in Denver, which will be held from August 25, to 28, 2008.

Said Rev. Joshua Dubois, Obama For America Director of Religious Affairs, "We are honored that so many religious leaders are reaching across partisan and ideological lines in this Convention to address the values that matter to Americans."

The following is a schedule of faith events and slated participation in in the '08 Democratic Convention. (Also see Insider Guide to the '08 Democratic Convention in Denver.)

Sunday, August 24, 2008

To kick-off the Convention, an interfaith gathering will be held at 2 PM at the Wells Fargo Theater at the Denver Convention Center.

Music will be performed by Grammy award winning gospel artist Richard Smallwood & Vision, The Spirituals Project of Denver and The Trinity United Methodist Church Choir.

Religious leaders participating in the interfaith gathering include:

  • Bishop Charles E. Blake, Presiding Prelate of the Church of God In Christ, Inc. and pastor at the West Angeles Church of God in Christ
  • Dr. Ingrid Mattson, President of the Islamic Society of North America;
  • Sister Helen Prejean, death penalty activist
  • Rabbi Tzvi Weinreb, Executive Vice President of the Orthodox Union
  • Imam Abdur-Rahim Ali of the Northeast Denver Islamic Center,
  • Rabbi Steven Foster from Congregation Emmanuel
  • Reverend Lucia Guzman, human rights leader
  • Buddhist participant and University of Colorado Denver student Kathryn Ida
Convention Day One - August 25, 2008

Invocation - Dr. Polly Baca, Catholic, Greeley, CO

Benediction - Don Miller, author of the popular spiritual memoir Blue Like Jazz

Convention Day Two - August 26, 2008

Invocation - Dr. Cynthia Hale, Disciples of Christ, Decatur, GA

Benediction - Revs. Jin Ho Kang and Young Sook Kang, Methodist, Aurora, CO

The Faith Caucus group will hold two panel discussions:

"Common Ground on Common Good" at 12:00 PM in the Denver Convention Center
Moderator - Rev. Jim Wallis of Sojourners, a progressive Christian ministry and bestselling author
