Bush Administration Planning Four More Years of Iraq War

Wednesday October 11, 2006
President Bush must have an unconscious defeat wish for Congressional Republicans in next month's mid-term elections

Today, 4 weeks before Americans elect the new 110th Congress, Army officials, who answer to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, announced that they're planning for US troops to be in Iraq at least through 2010.

"For planning purposes, the Army is gearing up to keep current troop levels in Iraq for another four years, a new indication that conditions there are too unstable to foresee an end to the war," AP reported today.

Gen. Peter Schoomaker, the Army chief of staff, tactlessly told reporters, ""This is not a prediction that things are going poorly or better... It's just that I have to have enough ammo in the magazine that I can continue to shoot as long as they want us to shoot."

Voice of America newsservice reports today:

" Public-opinion polls show falling support for the war. A survey by the newspaper USA Today says two-thirds of Americans disapprove of the way President Bush is handling that conflict...

The USA Today poll says 52 percent of voters believe opposition Democrats would do a better job handling Iraq. The war is likely to be on voters' minds as they go to the polls, with 86 percent saying Iraq is an extremely or very important part of deciding how they vote for Congress."

A few days ago, I wrote that "Small waves of anxious, unspoken doubt knot my stomach each time I read a poll or article predicting an unstoppable Democratic tsumani in the November 2006 mid-term elections."

On the heels of this news... I take my words back. I'm starting to believe that Democrats can't possibly blow the priceless political opportunity afforded by the intensely willful blindness and stubborn denial of reality by the Bush Administration.

For a snapshot of the extent of the Iraq War debacle, read my article Iraq War Results & Statistics as of October 4, 2006.
