America's Hypocritical Two-Faced Stance on Illegal Immigration

Friday July 28, 2006
America's hypocritical, two-faced stance on illegal immigration is crassly exemplified by today's issue of our local newspaper, The Orange County Register, which has the following four stories on the topic:

1. Border Plan in Doubt - "Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff agreed with lawmakers of both parties that plans for more agents, improved sensors and other measures will not stop the flow of illegal immigration at the Mexican border."

2. Illegal Border Traffic Shifting - ""The number of people being caught trying to enter the US illegally has dropped slightly this year. But the latest federal figures also show that the California and Texas borders are seeing increased traffic."

3. Immigration Hearings Set - "Republican lawmakers plan to highlight what they say are flaws in the Senate bill... House Republican leaders say they want an enforcement-only bill to be passed first."

4. New Laws Could Be Tough to Stomach - "Orange County restaurateurs say immigration regulations may disrupt operations, pose crushing fines and cause more enforcement work for businesses... Restaurants already face labor shortages... Immigration reform could cripple restaurateurs' livelihoods."

Let me summarize these stories for you:
In theory, US residents want illegal immigration from Mexico to end, but not if it inconveniences them with a waiter (gardener, housekeeper) shortage. Meanwhile, House Republicans continue to irrationally push for stringent enforcement measures that the Republican-led Homeland Security department openly admits don't work.

It's fair to say that neither the federal government and nor the wealthier citizenry of the United States have any genuine interest in reforming immigration laws.

And that makes perfect, greedily self-interested sense, as I explain at Illegal Immigration Explained: Profits & Poverty, Social Security & Starvation.

Thank you! The unjustness of the present situation is horribly wrong, and against the values America claims to stand for.
