Al Gore Urges US to Participate in Drafting Next Kyoto Protocols

Sunday June 11, 2006
This afternoon, I participated in a conference call with Al Gore, sponsored by MoveOn.org. Mr. Gore spoke at length, of course, about global warming, but for most of the hour, he answered questions from call participants.

Most of the questions were interesting and unique, and Gore responded intelligently and in great detail. Only once was he asked what it would take to convince him to run for the presidency in 2008, and he gave a convincing, if stock, answer of "I have no plans to run...."

One question stood out to me: What can the United States do right now to affect global warming?

Gore answered that the United States should be a member of the international group which is currently drafting the next generation of the Kyoto Protocol on global warming. In light of the Bush Administration's continuing refusal to participate, though, he strongly urged us to lobby our states and local cities to ratify this landmark international agreement on global warming standards.

Commented Mr. Gore, "It makes a big difference when (individual) cities ratify Kyoto Protocols."

(Oh, and Gore admitted that he's repeatedly offered to privately present his film, "An Inconvenient Truth," at the White House. No dice. And no apparent interest by Bush or Cheney.)
