Liberal Blogs on NSA Spying: Single Greatest Nightmare of Our Founders

Friday May 12, 2006
NSA phone-tapping of millions of Americans for the past five years goes beyond mere arrogance and power-mongering. It reflects a deliberate effort to thwart the Constitutional foundation of the United States....which George W. Bush swore to uphold. The enormity of this transgression against the freedom and liberty of all Americans can't be overstated.

The NSA phone-tapping operaton also reflects the grotesquely obsessive paranoia that grips the Bush Administration. These are devious and deeply hostile acts directed AT the American people , my friends. And it's dangerous beyond imagination to democratic government.
---------------
Let's take a jog around the liberal blogosphere to sample the ire of others on NSA phone-tapping.....

From Democrats & Liberals: "Unless I’m mistaken, local police are required to obtain a warrant to look through the very same phone records. Why is the NSA allowed to do this without a warrant?

Has this country, in the hands of George Bush, been turned into a Soviet Union wanna-be? The NSA has become the KGB. Fox News has become the Politburo. What’s next? A May-Day parade?"
----------------
Posted by commenter Punchy at top blog Talk Left: "Wow. It appears Bush really does think we're as ignorant as himself. Really, how else are we supposed to interpret this " we're not mining " line, knowing full well that's exactly what you must do with terabites of data collected....

Tomorrow, he'll tell us he only gets Playboy for the articles. With a straight face. This is evidence #592 that our President has the intellectual capacity of a typical 8th grader."
---------------
From litigator and blogger Glenn Greenwld at Unclaimed Territory - "This continuous evasion of judicial review by the administration is much more serious and disturbing than has been discussed and realized. By proclaiming the power to ignore Congressional law and to do whatever it wants in the area of national security, it is seizing the powers of the legislative branch.

But by blocking courts from ruling on the multiple claims of illegality which have been made against it, the administration is essentially seizing the judicial power as well. It becomes the creator, the executor, and the interpreter of the law.

And with that, the powers of all three branches become consolidated in The President, the single greatest nightmare of the founders."
---------------
From blogger Georgia10 at DailyKos: "We now know that the program begins by casting such a huge net (billions of calls) that it results in thousands of tips a month. As the New York Times reported, these "tips" were fruitless, often leading FBI agents to dead-end investigations of grandmothers and Pizza Huts.....

When the domestic spying program first broke, some Americans brushed it off, since it purportedly listened only to those suspected of terrorism. But what Americans need to understand is that this most recent disclosure means that every American is a potential terror suspect....the government monitors your calls. Every. Single. One. Day after day, month after month, year after year.

Where government is inherently established to protect its citizens, it is now operating to protect itself from them."
---------------
And the final word come from leading blogger and liberal thinker Avedon Carol at The Sideshow: "Just out of curiosity, when was the last time you heard someone say, without irony, 'It's a free country'? "

As much as I hate to say it, this one isn’t going to go anywhere.

I deeply fear you’re correct. It’s a serious tragedy for “liberty and freedom for all.”

It’s the clear beginning of the end of Constitutional freedoms in the United States. Or maybe we’ve already substantially advanced beyond the beginning….

Its because of people like you that other countries laugh at us. Terrorists laugh at us. I don’t agree with a lot of the things our President has done over the last 6 years, but this one is ludicrous. Do you really think our Founding Fathers could even comprehend having to defend our borders and citizens from faceless terrorists that can pretty much come and go in our country as they please? Do you really think our President is going to become a dictator? That’s laughable.
Besides, our government is not looking for the man cheating on his wife or the son talking to his mom on Mother’s Day, it is looking for terrorists. If you aren’t one, you don’t have to worry about it.
