Gore, Kennedy, Clooney on a New Green Revolution
In it, Al Gore pens an extraordinary and detailed, must-read essay, The Future Is Green, in which he exhorts, "The rapid accumulation of global-warming pollution in the Earth's atmosphere is now confronting human civilization with a crisis like no other we have ever encountered....
....we can solve this crisis, and as we finally do accept the truth of our situation and turn to boldly face down the danger that is stalking us, we will find that it is also bringing us unprecedented opportunity. I'm not referring just to new jobs and new profits, though there will be plenty of both.
Today, we have all the technologies we need to start the fight against global warming. We can build clean engines. We can harness the sun and wind. We an stop wasting energy. We can use the Earth's plentiful coal resources without heating the planet."
Articles profile environmental leaders, activists, visionaries and entrepreneurs and their ideas. The most frightening and eerily fascinating article, though, is "While Washington Slept," which features sea-level rise statistics and computer-modeled photos of cities and regions should sea-level rise merely three feet (which is remarkably probable by 2010). Flooded areas pictured include New York City, Washington DC, Martha's Vineyard and San Francisco.
Despite the cover photo, this is not an issue about celebrity activists. Gore, Kennedy, Clooney and Roberts are profiled and interviewed only in the routine "On the Cover" column. George Clooney, though, has the best quote of the issue....a quote we can all apply to our own green efforts: talking about making the 2005 film Syriana and his personal decision to ditch his BMW for an electric car, "If you're doing a movie about oil consumption and corruption, you can't just talk the talk, You gotta walk the walk."
