Live Blogging the State of the Union: President to Thumb Nose at Privacy; Fun Democratic Moments

Tuesday January 31, 2006
As I write this, the President is delivering the 2006 State of the Union address. No surprises so far, except this one:

"So to prevent another attack - based on authority given to me by the Constitution and by statute - I have authorized a terrorist surveillance program to aggressively pursue the international communications of suspected al-Qaida operatives and affiliates to and from America. Previous presidents have used the same constitutional authority I have - and Federal courts have approved the use of that authority."

Translation: I don't give a damn about the legal requirement to obtain judicial permission and oversight to spy. I don't plan to obtain any sort of permission to spy on anyone I want to...even though all Presidents before me did so. I will continue to thumb my nose at the personal privacy of Americans, and there's not a damn thing you can do about it. I choose to act and be above the law.
----------
Most Jubilant Democratic Moment: Democrats wildly cheering and clapping, bringing the President's speech to a standstill when he read from the teleprompter, "Congress did not act last year on my proposal to save Social Security...."

The President frowned, while Hillary and the like smiled broadly. Fun times!
----------
Bush Moment of Rooting out Terrorists : Activist Cindy Sheehan was invited by Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) to attend the President's SOTU speech. Middle-aged mother Cindy Sheehan sat in her assigned seat, wearing an antiwar t-shirt.

Cindy was promptly arrested by Capitol Police for her t-shirt, and removed from the Congressional chambers in handcuffs. Police said she would be questioned for about an hour, then released on her own recognizance. The President's speech is about....you guessed it....an hour long. Fun times!
----------
Talk Like a Democrat, Act Like a Republican: In the SOTU, President Bush cited with praise and admiration Martin Luther King, Jr., Coretta Scott King, and Democratic Presidents Bill Clinton and Franklin D. Roosevelt. How many Republican presidents and leaders did he cite? One, Abraham Lincoln, who lived 150 years ago and would surely be a Democrat today.

The domestic-issues half of his speech sounded suspiciously like a liberal evangelical Christian. His vocabulary choices could've been taken from the books of.....best-selling progressive author Jim Wallis. Fun times!

I admit it...I forgot to play the State of the Union Drinking Game. I plan to remember next year. Fun times!
