Deborah White's US Liberal Politics BlogThe Liberal Blogosphere on Democratic Governor Victories in New Jersey and Virginia"Democrats swept both governors' races Tuesday, with Sen. Jon Corzine easily winning New Jersey and Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine taking Virginia despite a last-minute campaign push for his opponent from President Bush," reports AP.
AP continues, "In a jubilant speech, Corzine pledged...'As your governor, together we can change the way the public business is done in New Jersey.' ....Bush appeared at a Monday night rally with Kilgore — the first public campaign appearance with the president in a state that twice voted for Bush. 'There's no way to spin this than anything other than a major defeat for Republicans and for President Bush,' said University of Virginia political scientist Larry Sabato. 'This is a red state, he came in on Election Eve and he had no discernible effect....If anything, he may have cost Kilgore some votes.' " Do these two lopsided gubernatorial wins for Democrats signal better times ahead for Democratic success in elections? Of course, only time will tell that, but it's always enlightening to gauge the political winds blowing through cyberspace. So let's take a jog through the blogosphere, and see what wise and witty liberal minds are saying about the Corzine and Kaine wins. Corzine's victory in New Jersey by 10.5% was a clear message to the GOP that their tactics were foul and disgusting and should never be tried in these parts again, and to make sure the GOP heard that message, the Democratic majority in the State Assembly increased by four or five seats." But I have to say, while this beats the losing we've experienced the last couple of years, this is still quite unsatisfying. Let's call it the appetizer. 2006 is the real target. We've got the momentum and a Republican Party reeling from its inability to govern. We can't let them regain their balance. We've got to keep them on the defensive, take advantage of every opening they provide to score additional points. " So what's got me celebrating? Well, Democratic candidate John Corzine won a nasty campaign for governor of New Jersey, Democrat Tim Kaine won the governorship of the ultra-red state of Virgina, every member of the creationist-packed school board of Dover, PA was swept out of office, a blantantly homophobic ballot initiative in Maine was defeated.... Is this what it feels like when the good guys win?" Wednesday November 9, 2005 | comments (0) Display Latest Headlines | powered by WordPress |
