Profile of Rep. Mark Udall, 2008 Senate Candidate from Colorado

Wednesday July 30, 2008
Rep. Mark Udall, Senate candidate from Colorado, championed renewable energy sources and opposed oil drilling in environmentally sensitive areas, long before these issues became popular liberal causes.

Udall's voting record as a five-term Congressman is rated 100% on environmental issues by the League of Conservation Voters, and 100% on energy independence issues by the Campaign for America's Future.

But Udall isn't a one-issue political leader: Udall had the wisdom to vote NO in 2002 on the Iraq War, and is rated as having a 100% pro-peace record by the Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy.

And in late 2001, he had the courage and foresight to vote NO on the privacy-invading Patriot Act, largely due to his strong libertarian-leaning beliefs that the government shouldn't interfere in Americans' personal lives.

Like many generations of the famed Udall family, though, and like first cousin Rep. Tom Udall, running for the Senate from New Mexico this November, Mark Udall's legislative efforts are focused most on U.S. energy policies and on preserving the environment.

Writes Udall, "... we have a moral obligation to be good stewards of our natural environment and conserve it for future generations."
