U.S. Senator Lynne Cheney?

Wednesday June 6, 2007
Democrats, try this stomach-churning shoe on for size: U.S. Senator Lynne Cheney.

Sadly, Senator Craig Thomas (R-WY) passed away last week. His successor will soon be chosen by Wyoming Democratic Governor Dave Freudenthal who is required by state law to select from among 3 candidates determined by the Republican state central committee.

Mrs. Cheney, an author who holds a P.h.D. in British literature, is eminently qualified to be a legislator. She is presently senior fellow in education and culture at conservative think tank American Enterprise Institute. And her many decades of public service and corporate board memberships include 7 years as chairwoman of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

And Lynne Cheney is an outspoken, conservative politico extraordinaire and darling of the neocons. Wikipedia even claims that Mrs. Cheney was mentioned in 2000 to be George Bush's running mate. (Funny how Dick Cheney, chair of the Bush search committee for a vice president, was himself selected over his wife... )

Oh, and Lynne Cheney has been married for 43 years to one of the most unpopular elected federal officials in U.S. history.

Uber-blogger Wonkette explains why Gov. Freudenthal, who is expected to be the special election Democratic nominee in 2008 for this Senate seat, may cleverly select Lynne Cheney over other Republicans contenders:

"According to MSNBC, Wyoming’s GOP will pick three potentials to replace that guy who died, and then Wyoming’s Democrat governor is forced to choose one of them as the new senator until the special election — yes, apparently we still have elections, too, sometimes.

And that very governor, Dave Freudenthal, is likely to be the Democrat candidate in the special election. So Dave just has to pick the most hated person out of the three, and that’s who he gets to run against in 2008."

Here's my advice, governor: DON'T DO IT! Resist this deal with the devil.

Give these people an inch, they take 10 miles, governor. Or 100 miles. And they make oodles of money for Halliburton while doing it. The Cheneys hold on to power like fleas to a mangy dog.

Dick and Lynne Cheney have been intimately involved in influencing U.S. policy for 30 years. Finally, we're SO CLOSE to sending them home to Wyoming! Please... please... ignore this black impulse, governor.

Don't shatter liberals' faint, fevered dream of Washington D.C. without a Bush or Cheney!
