Who Will the President Listen to on Iraq: Congress or Laura & Barney the Dog?

Sunday January 7, 2007
U.S voters sent an unmistakable message to President Bush at the polls in November 2006: Start withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq, and present us with an exit plan. Now.

The $500 billion question is... will The Great Decider decide to listen? Or will he stand by his foolishly arrogant pledge to "not withdraw from Iraq even if Laura and Barney the dog are the only ones supporting him"?

Will the President listen to Congressional Democrats who, en masse, sent him a letter on January 5 signed by leaders Pelosi and Reid:

"Adding more combat troops will only endanger more Americans and stretch our military to the breaking point for no strategic gain. And it would undermine our efforts to get the Iraqis to take responsibility for their own future. We are well past the point of more troops for Iraq."

Read the entire letter at Democrats Urge NO New Troop Surge in Iraq War.

Will he listen to the distinguished American council of elder statesmen and stateswomen (and close chums of Bush 41), the Iraq Study Group, when they beseeched after 8 months of intensive research and testimony:

"...there is little evidence that the long-term deployment of U.S. troops by itself has led or will lead to fundamental improvements in the security situation... "

Update yourself by skimming The Iraq Study Group Report: The 79 Recommendations .

For almost 4 years, Mr. Bush has claimed to defer to his generals on Iraq War strategy. Will he listen to 4-star General Wesley Clark, former Supreme Allied Commander, when Clark writes:

"What the surge would do... is put more American troops in harm's way, further undercut US forces' morale, and risk further alienation of elements of the Iraqi populace... "

Will the President listen to 4-star General John P. Abizaid, Senior Commander in the Middle East for more than 3 years and the most senior U.S. military officer of direct Arab descent, when he states that:

"... foreign troops are a toxin bound to be rejected by Iraqis" and that "expanding the number of American troops merely puts off the day when Iraqis are forced to take responsibility for their own security."

I mean... if that famously annoying feuding duo, Donald Trump and Rosie O'Donnell, can agree on the Iraq War, is our lone-wolf President so out-of-touch that he still can't bridge his myopic pride to commence phased withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq?

Or will President George W. Bush opt to stand alone with only his wife and household pets, as he promised Congressional Republicans, per Bob Woodward?

And if Mr. Bush does choose to commit more, not less, troops to Iraq, what will WE do next?
