Senator George Clooney?

Tuesday December 12, 2006
U.S. Senator George Clooney of Kentucky.

It has a very appealing ring to it. And one Democratic mover-and-shaker in the Bluegrass State wants to make it reality.

Mark Nickolas, founder of BluegrassReport.org, has launched a campaign to convince Kentucky-born Clooney to run in 2008 to unseat 4-term Sen. Mitch McConnell, the incoming Senate Minority Leader. And Nikolas has the connections and track record to make it happen.

It's no secret that Clooney cares deeply about politics and the Democratic Party. Besides being a regular contributor to Democratic candidates, George is outspoken in his beliefs that "the liberal movement morally... has stood on the right side of an awful lot of issues." And he's an informed and passionate advocate for many Democratic stances.

Before you laugh-off the possibility of the two-time Sexiest Man Alive as legislative leader, consider this: A body-builder turned silver-screen action hero was just elected to a second term as California governor. And a former B-list movie star is regarded as one of the greatest U.S. Presidents.

Thusfar, Clooney has been reticent to run for public office. Reports Esquire magazine in this month's issue:

"Not surprisingly, he acknowledges having given serious thought to running for office—and others have encouraged him to make those thoughts more real, salivating Democrats especially.

But after watching his father's failed run for Congress in 2004, he has shelved those ambitions, probably permanently."

For years, activist Arnold avoided running for public office before succumbing to the inevitable in 2003. Now, Maria can't pry her husband away from the political circuit.

I hope George Clooney gives serious consideration to running for the U.S. Senate in 2008 or beyond. Until then, a girl can dream...

As Kos of DailyKos commented about the prospect of Sen. George Clooney, "... this would be awesome."
