Praises for President Bush as US Uses Diplomacy in Iran Dealings

Thursday June 1, 2006
The New York Times reported today that "After 27 years in which the United States has refused substantive talks with Iran, President Bush reversed course on Wednesday because it was made clear to him — by his allies, by the Russians, by the Chinese, and eventually by some of his advisers — that he no longer had a choice.

During the past month,...it became obvious to Mr. Bush that he could not hope to hold together a fractious coalition of nations to enforce sanctions — or consider military strikes on Iranian nuclear sites — unless he first showed a willingness to engage Iran's leadership directly over its nuclear program and exhaust every nonmilitary option."

And as a direct result of President Bush setting aside his arrogant bully-swagger and "Bring 'em on" cowboy taunts, France, Britain, Germany, the United States, Russia and China jointly agreed today on a "significant" package of incentives to convince Iran to halt its uranium enrichment program.

After a meeting today of the six world powers, British Foreign Secretary Margaret "Becket said 'we urge Iran to take the positive path' and promised to suspend Security Council action against Tehran if it agreed to halt enrichment" per AP.

AP also reports, "At the White House, President Bush warned that the confrontation would end up at the U.N. Security Council if Iran continues to enrich uranium. 'If they continue their obstinance, if they continue to say to the world `We really don't care what your opinion is,' then the world is going to act in concert,' Bush said after meeting with his Cabinet at the White House."

OK....are you sitting down for my comment???

Hallelujah! My wholehearted praises to President Bush for submitting to diplomacy and working in tandem with the world community to mitigate this deadly situation, which is crucial to world peace and prosperity. This our the first hint (perhaps ever) of Bush listening seriously to anyone outside of Cheney/Rove/Rumsfeld. If it has averted the hellish nightmare of the Bush Administration attempting to drop nukes on Iran, then I stand to praise the President.

Now I pray that, in time, he applies the same skills of reason and forced humility to resolving the violent US military occupation of Iraq. Call me naive.....but Mr. Bush's intelligence today in dealing with Iran gives me new hope for that possibility under his administration.

(Of course, liberal praise alone is enough to cause the Bill O'Reillys and Sean Hannitys to question the wisdom of the President. Today's actions of peace must KILL those neocons dying to nuke the Middle East into passive oblivion.....)

Hi Deb – ok, ok, if ya wanna offer praise, by all means… but it’s not like Bush had a choice, ya know?

True. But he’s made horrible and obstinate choices before, when faced with obvious reality. At least this time, he didn’t let his macho pride guide his decision-making.
