Quote of the Week: Columnist George Will Calls Conservative Slogan "Arrogant"

Thursday May 18, 2006
"An aggressively annoying new phrase in America's political lexicon is 'values voters.' It is used proudly by social conservatives, and carelessly by the media to denote such conservatives.

This phrase diminishes our understanding of politics. It also is arrogant on the part of social conservatives and insulting to everyone else because it implies that only social conservatives vote to advance their values and everyone else votes to . . . well, it is unclear what they supposedly think they are doing with their ballots...."

-- Pulitzer Prize-winning conservative columnist and author George Will, on May 17, 2006 in the Washington Post, in his column entitled "Who Isn't a Values Voter?"

What’s equally misguided and arrogant is the notion held by some “progressives” that supporting same-sex marriage is political suicide. “Values” are should and shouldn’t statements. I think most people give same sex marriage a low ranked priority in the context of “should our soldiers be dying in Iraq” or “should we be paying $3.00 a gallon for gas.

Senator Russ Feingold walked out from a Senate Judiciary Committee meeting today, after they voted to pass the “marriage amendment” on to the full Senate. He and Committee Chairman Arlen Specter shouted at each other, and made some seriously cutting remarks. LOL

Russ has something the Hillary led Jellocrats (I include the current version of Dean in that group)don’t- leadership qualities and the courage of his conviction.
