Womens' History Month: Profiles & Photos of Astronauts, Actresses and Everyday Heroines

Saturday March 4, 2006
March is Womens' History Month, and there's little I admire more than women who use their gifts and passions to pursue noble professions, create works of beauty, and fight the good fight for worthy causes....for their fellow men and women, for children, for their faith, for their community and the larger world.

Jone Johnson Lewis, About.com's Guide to Womens' History, has authored one of About.com's most fascinating sites, including categories on womens' roles in air and space exploraton; ancient and midieval times; sports; medicine and nursing; military and war; politics and legal systems; and, of course, family life.

Here are a few of my favorite articles at About.com's Guide to Womens' History.....

-- Women Suffrage Marchers Attacked at 1913 Inauguration

-- 100 Years of Women Figure Skating Champions

-- Top Ten Women in Mathemathics History

-- Photo Gallery of Dr. Sally Ride, First US Woman in Space

-- History of Mothers' Day in the United States

-- Ordination of Women as Christian Pastors and Priests

-- Profile of Rachel Carson, environmentalist writer whose 1962 book Silent Spring helped spark the environmentalist movement in the late 20th century.

And since it's Academy Awards weekend, here's a treasure-trove of profiles and rare photos of actresses from film, stage and television, from Lucille Ball and the great 19th century stage actress Sarah Bernhardt to American classics Katherine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Lena Horne, Clara Bow, Judy Garland and much more.

I'm now so inspired by these women, I need to go find my old Helen Reddy records. "I am woman, Hear me roar".... :)

Enjoy, and share with your daughters!
