San Francisco Supervisors Vote to Support Impeachment of Bush & Cheney

Wednesday March 1, 2006
Last night, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a resolution, by a vote of 7 - 3, asking their Democratic representatives in Congress to pursue the impeachment of President Bush "for failing to perform his duties by leading the country into war in Iraq, eroding civil liberties and engaging in other activities the board sees as transgressions," per the San Francisco Chronicle.

"I think the case is clear, and I think it's appropriate for us to weigh in," said Supervisor Chris Daly, who sponsored the measure.

In response, Rep. Tom Lantos (D-CA) told the Chronicle, "Real change in the direction of our country will come about when the Republicans no longer control the executive and legislative branches. We need to take control of the House, elect more Democratic senators and take control of the White House in 2008.''

And House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, a San Francisco resident, who has long voiced her frustration with this White House and the Republican-led Congress, said in January 2006, "Win the election. Then you can change the policy of our country.''

With the Board of Supervisors vote last night, San Francisco becomes the first major American city whose leadership formally voted to support impeachment of President Bush and Vice-President Cheney.

UPDATE - ImpeachPac emailed me that "Two other California cities - Santa Cruz and Arcata - have also adopted impeachment resolutions. Similar resolutions are pending in Chapel Hill NC and Newfane VT."
