Blogosphere Anxiously Awaits Jon Stewart as Academy Awards Host

Sunday February 26, 2006
Today starts Jon Stewart week in Hollywood, as filmdom gets ready for political comedian and liberal darling Stewart's first gig as host of the Academy Awards on March 5. Producer Gil Cates said Stewart was selected for the ratings-lagging program because "He's hip; he's with-it; he's today."

Jon Stewart is the sole guest on Larry King's CNN program on Monday, and several major newspapers (Los Angeles Times, New York Times) have recent fawning articles not normally accorded awards show hosts.

It's an A-list gig for biting-wit political comedians, but many have flopped embarrassingly, including another late-night comic, David Letterman. Nonetheless, bloggers anxiously await Jon Stewart as host of the Academy Awards next Sunday, hoping that he lands delightful zingers about George Bush, Dick Cheney and the like. Let's take a jog around the blogosphere to sample thoughts on Jon Stewart....

From izardofoz at LiveJournal: "The Oscars are in a week. Jon Stewart will be hosting. This will be the highlight for me. Can't wait for this."

From yObb at LiveJournal: " I really, really hope that Jon Stewart doesn't try to play it PC and pile on the Brokeback Mountain jokes."

From gregx, also at LiveJournal: "Jon Stewart is going to be on Larry King this Monday. Will he destroy Larry like he destroyed Tucker Carlson? We'll soon see ;)"

And from blogger Andrew Roberts' Random Thoughts: "I know this event happened almost a year ago, but with Jon hosting the Oscars...,I think it is a good time to reflect on his appearance on CNN's now cancelled Crossfire. Partisan shows and 24 hour news networks are making a mockery of the profession once known as journalism.

In general the Oscars are a pompous and overblown event where the best movies rarely beat the ones with the largest campaign budget, but I will be tune in to see Jon give his best attempt at following in the shoes of Carson and others."
