Coretta King Tribute Marks US Political Turning Point

Tuesday February 7, 2006
The funeral on Tuesday of Coretta Scott King was an important turning point politically for this nation. Mark my words on that.

Coretta and Martin Luther King would have been delighted, seeing Democratic speaker after speaker, boldly decrying poverty, violence, war and discrimination....just as the Kings once did.

To vigorous applause, Senator Ted Kennedy read from the biblical book of Matthew. Rep. John Conyers and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton drew accolades for their sentiments. The thousands of mainly African-American mourners gave President Bill Clinton a long, emotional ovation before he even stepped to the pulpit.

Nobel Peace Prize winner, President Jimmy Carter drew standing ovations for his courageous observations that ...

"It was difficult for them personally with the civil liberties of both husband and wife violated, and they became the targets of secret government wiretapping and other surveillance" in a jab at President Bush, and....

"..."we only have to recall the color of the faces of those in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi who are most devastated by Katrina to know that there are not yet equal opportunities for all Americans."

But the Atlanta, Georgia church service was brought to a standstill by joyous, wall-reverberating cheering when the Rev. Joseph Lowery of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) thundered....

"She extended Martin's message against poverty, racism and war. She deplored the terror inflicted by our smart bombs on missions way afar. We know now there were no weapons of mass destruction over there. But Coretta knew and we knew that there are weapons of misdirection right down here. Millions without health insurance. Poverty abounds. For war billions more but no more for the poor. "

It was a fitting tribute for Coretta Scott King, as it perfectly exemplified and honored her life and her ministries, as well as those of her husband. She would have been thrilled.

And like Al Gore's historic speech last month on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the thousands of listeners cheered with deep, empowering abandon at the criticisms of the Bush Administration.

Mark my words. These two occasions will be remembered as turning points for the Democratic Party in its patriotic fight for freedom and justice for all, not just the wealthy elite.
