More Good News: Senate Democrats Raise More than Republicans in 2005

Thursday February 2, 2006
"The major Senate Democratic fundraising committee has pulled millions of dollars ahead of its Republican counterpart despite the solid GOP Senate majority and the fundraising advantages of incumbency" reported the Washington Post yesterday.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, chaired by Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-NY), reported collecting $44 million in 2005, nearly $10 million more than the $35.5 million raised by the National Republican Senatorial Committee, chaired by Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC).... "

The Washington Post continued, "More important, the Democratic committee ended the year with a cash balance of $25 million available for use in the 2006 elections, compared with the Senate Republicans' $10.5 million cash on hand."

This a complete reversal of just five years ago when Senate Republicans outraised Democrats by tens of millions, and used the funds to clobber Democrats at the polls.

This is great news, indeed, especially when coupled with the news in my article from last Friday, 2006 Senate Races Look Very Positive for Democrats. Of the 28 senators running for reelection in 2006, the bottom four approval ratings are all for Republican senators, and four of five top ratings are for Democrats. Read here for the approval ratings for all 28 senators running for reelection in 2006.

As of now, Senate Democrats enter the 2006 campaign season with a healthy collective lead both in approval ratings and in funds.

We can take nothing and no voter for granted, and it's no time to become overconfident or arrogant......but after the darkness and corruption of the past few years, it feels wonderful to walk once again in the shining (and realistic) light of hope for a better day for all Americans, not just the wealthy elite.
