Lesser Known Words of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Wednesday January 11, 2006
" This business of burning human beings with napalm, of filling our nation's homes with orphans and widows, of injecting poisonous drugs of hate in to the veins of peoples normally humane, of sending men home from dark and bloody battlefields physically handicapped and psychologically deranged, cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice and love.

A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death. "

-------- Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. , awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and by the American Jewish Committee, the American Liberties Medallion

In honor of Dr. King's January 15 birthday, which our nation commemorates on the third Monday of January, I have compiled some of his lesser known words.....words that are as relevant and compelling today as when he uttered them 40 or more years ago. Intriguing words on science and religion, war and peace, on justice, community and civil rights for all Americans.

Reading his wise and inspiring words reminds me again of Dr. King's unique propehtic genius. Dr. King was also a model of bold Democratic leadership, passionately striving for the American ideals of equality and fairness. Democrats everywhere would do well to heed Rev. King's example and internalize the lessons he taught us about fighting for what is right.

As we collectively labor to free our beloved nation from its present Bush-designed, Republican-led morass of corruption and greed, lies and moral and fiscal bankruptcy, we need to remember those words of Dr. King....

" Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor. It must be demanded by the oppressed. "
