Jog Around the Blogosphere: Alito Confirmation Dead or a Done Deal?

Wednesday November 16, 2005
Senate hearings begin in early January 2006 for the confirmation of Judge Samuel Alito, Jr. to be a Supreme Court Justice. The blogosphere is already buzzing away, though, with news and rumors of stories ranging from liberal dissatisfaction with Judge Alito's abortion views to claims that Alito confirmation is a "done deal."
----------
From blogger Left Turn on Bird Street, "Word leaking out of the US Senate indicates Alito's appointment to the Supreme Court is a done deal between the Republicans and Democrats....

Already, key members of the "gang of 14"—a group of "moderate" Republican and Democratic senators—are signaling that Alito will be confirmed without a Democratic filibuster....

And wasn't this sort of deal the last straw that was going to break the Democratic faithful's back?

First there was the done deal with Gore's quick concession of a presidential race he was actually winning. Then came Kerry's even quicker concession of a presidential race he was later shown to be winning. Then there was done deal with John Roberts. Now comes the apparent caving with Alito.

Since time out of mind, the Dems have offered no bona fide opposition to anything, except perhaps for the minimum needed to keep up appearances."
----------
Blogger Tom Kertes at Poitical Porn has the opposite take on the Alito confirmation....

" I think that Bush is getting weaker, and that’s why Alito has a target on his head for the upcoming confirmation. He’s no Miers - and so any attack will require more than a look into vacant eyes.

But it seems that more and more media pundits and Democrats see Bush blood, and are willing to go all out to put Bush out his misery. So I retract my earlier prediction that the fight over Alito will be tame, with confirmation likely. "
----------
One thing is clear about Judge Alito...he is personally opposed to abortion, but claims he "respects" the 1973 Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the US. M

Now, I'm not sure how Judge Alito defines respect, but blogger Zeros and Ones has a hypothesis.... "Alito may 'respect' Roe v. Wade, much like one might respect a poisonous spider found on the floor of your bedroom - but he would kill it just as quickly."
