Blogosphere Brims with Cheney Resignation Rumors, Rice to Be New VP

Monday October 24, 2005
The blogosphere abounds with Cheney-Rice rumors, in the wake of the Valerie Plame Wilson-CIA leak investigation....

From blogger Fred Alan...."Sparked by today's Washington Post story that suggests Vice President Cheney's office is involved in the Plame-CIA spy link investigation, government officials and advisers passed around rumors that the vice president might step aside and that President Bush would elevate Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice."
----------
From Paul Bedard of US World & News Report, via RadioBlogger...."Some folks are wondering well, if this is true, and Cheney gets hit, well my gosh, he's going to have to resign.

And of course, that fed into, and feeds into the long-standing conspiracy theory that what is really behind any resignation is that President Bush wants to signal who he would like as his successor. The flavor of the month, year, you could say, is Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of State.

And so, all we were doing was kind of suggesting that this is the rumor, senior White House officials are saying you know, get a life. It's not going to happen. in fact, somebody very close to the Vice President's office called me this afternoon and said listen, buddy. You're never going fishing with the Vice President. "
----------
From The Weekly Review blog, " I wouldn't bet on Cheney's resignation; he's of the 'pry it out of my cold, dead hands' variety. Plus, the Veepship has been pretty good to him. Still, the more that comes to light in Fitzgerald's investigation, the worse it looks for people right up the ladder reaching into the Oval Office. "
----------
From blog In The Pink Texas, "The Valerie Plame investigation has led straight to Cheney’s office, causing some speculation that Vice President Cheney will be forced to… retire. And who would take his spot but… Condoleezza Rice, fueling rumors that she’ll run for Prez in 2008. Meanwhile, Cheney remains in good spirits, and has been perfecting his 'Tea for Two' tap routine with dance partner Donald Rumsfeld."
----------
Oh...but wait. Is Condi Republican enough? Is she Christian enough? Never mind her impeccable credentials and masterful, albeit conservative, leadership. Is she actually a true-blue Dobson-style Republican who passes all the politically-correct litmus loyalty tests?

Back to Paul Bedard of US News & World Report, via blogger Cocoricamo, for that answer. "The rumor spread so fast that some Republicans by late morning were already drawing up reasons why Rice couldn’t get the job or run for president in 2008.

'Isn’t she pro-choice?' asked a key Senate Republican aide."
