Senator Barack Obama Condemns White House Indifference to Poverty
"Whoever was in charge of planning was so detached from the realities of inner city life in New Orleans ... that they couldn't conceive of the notion that they couldn't load up their SUV's, put $100 worth of gas in there, put some sparkling water and drive off to a hotel and check in with a credit card."
Senator Obama continued, "There seemed to be a sense that this other America was somehow not on people's radar screen. And that, I think, does have to do with historic indifference on the part of government to the plight of those who are disproportionately African-American." He added that "passive indifference is as bad as active malice."
Obama was articulate, rational and outspoken in his appearance this morning on the ABC program. He exuded the concern and passion of a leader, not the partisan finger-pointing of a lesser politician.
On the subject of Judge John G.Roberts, Jr.'s qualifications to be a Supreme Court Justice, Senator Obama, a Harvard-educated attorney, conceded that Roberts is a well-qualified, well-schooled candidate for the Supreme Court.....but that perhaps Roberts lacks the "heart" that one would hope for in a Court Justice.
We may look back on the Hurricane Katrina recovery period as one that forced the long-anticipated emergence of Barack Obama as a national leader of the American people. Circumstances and fate...many would say the hand of God...may have forced Obama's political hand before he planned to play it. He has clearly stated that he is not a candidate for the 2008 presidency. Millions of Americans would love to see the senator change his mind.....
