Krugman and White on the Urgent Need for US Election Reform

Friday August 19, 2005
I can't recall disagreeing with even one op-ed written by Paul Krugman, New York Times columnist since 1999 and longtime professor of Economics & International Affairs at Princeton University...and today is no exception.

Today, he writes briefly of the reality of fraud in the US presidential elections of 2000 and 2004, and then points out that our country is more bitterly divided than ever. Serious potential scandals bubble just below the surface of public outrage and Congressional investigation.....held in check by Republicans in Congress who refuse to open any can of worms that could damage the current administration.

Krugman concludes, "Our current political leaders would suffer greatly if either house of Congress changed hands in 2006, or if the presidency changed hands in 2008. The lids would come off all the simmering scandals, from the selling of the Iraq war to profiteering by politically connected companies. The Republicans will be strongly tempted to make sure that they win those elections by any means necessary. And everything we've seen suggests that they will give in to that temptation. "

Paul Krugman's op-ed is a "must-read" today. And then be sure to read the first in my trilogy of articles on US voting rights and electoral reform, Democracy and Voting: Ohio 2004 as Lesson in What Can Go Wrong.

Krugman is dead-on correct when he writes that "few Americans have heard these facts." The verified facts are guaranteed to shock you......

Election reform is essential for the US to remain a democracy. To ignore it is to blatantly and foolishly waste everything our great country stands for. Get informed, and then get angry, America! They're stealing your precious vote.
