The Basics: Pros & Cons of Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Tuesday May 24, 2005
Now that cooler heads have prevailed, and Senate Democrats have effectively quashed the Bush Administraton's scary grab for one-party power, Congress can get back to the business of running our great country. Kudos to Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid for a masterful and patriotic job of leadership.

Today, the House of Representatives is debating and voting on two bills related to federal funding of stem cell research. One bill, sponsored by Representatives Michael Castle (R-DE) and Diana DeGette (D-CO) has attracted the support of 200 members of the House. And yet, the debate will be contentious and heartfelt.

On one hand, most scientists believe that one form of stem cells, embryonic stem cells taken from lab-controlled human eggs, hold the key to curing and alleviating suffering from hundreds of injuries and diseases, including spinal cord injuries, Alzheimers, Parkinsons, cancer and much more. .

On the other hand, some staunch pro-lifers and many pro-life organizations believe that it's immoral to destroy a days-old embryo in order to save and provide relief to existing life. They argue that not enough attention has been given to other sources of stem cells.

The scientific and medical issues are complex, and emotions run high for both supporters and opponents of embryonic stem cell research and therapy. All polls show that Americans strongly favor reversing President Bush's ban on using federal funding to expand embryonic stem cell research in the US.

At Pros & Cons of Embryonic Stem Cell Research, I simplify and explain this new medical technology, the controversy surrounding it and recent developments. Take the time to read this basic article, so you can be part of the national conversation.
