Pro-Life Democrats Kick-Off Campaign to Reduce Abortions by 95%
At a late April press conference at DNC offices, 3 Democratic Congressmen...Tim Ryan (D-OH), Bart Stupak (D-MI) and Lincoln Davis (D-TN)...joined DFLA officials to kick-off the "95-10 Initiative," which is a comprehensive package of 17 federal legislation and policy proposals designed to reduce US abortions by 95% within 10 years.
Included in the 17 proposals are grants for purchase of ultrasound equipment for free exams; pregnancy prevention education; mandates to provide complete info about the effects of abortion and accuracy of genetic testing; grants for shelter for pregnant women experiencing domestic violence; certain parental notification mandates; adoption tax credits and much more.
Said DFLA Board member Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE), "The plan outlined today is a good first step to successfully reduce the rate of abortion by offering alternatives that promote family, promote adoption, and provide education and support for new mothers."
Representative Ryan has assumed leadership for this legislation, and will soon introduce the "95-10 Initiative" into Congress. "This is a tremendous step forward for women and children," said Ryan, "and I intend to work hard at building support necessary to get this proposal enacted into law."
The Democratic Party has traditionally been associated with pro-choice stances on abortion, but, as Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) lamented in a January 2005 speech, most Democrats believe that abortion is a "sad, even tragic" choice for women.
The DFLA, the self-described "pro-life voice within the Democratic party," is committed to reducing US abortions by 95% within 10 years with this innovative and resourceful package of practical programs and policies.
Per the DFLA, "While both Democrats and Republicans talk about reducing the number of abortions, the Democrats for Life of America offers real solutions to make this goal a reality."
